Book Recommendation

There are so many books that I love but if I had to pick one I would have to go with Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon.  Not only does Gabaldon have the best “how she got her book published story” out there, the book itself is wildly entertaining from start to finish. I can’t say I feel that way about all the books in the very famous series but Outlander is a rip-through-it-type novel. The characters of Jamie and Claire are fantastic, entertaining and multifaceted. The story of time travel is a backdrop to the adventure, danger and love story that is Jamie and Claire in 16th century Scotland. I tell anyone who asks to read the first pleasant 100 pages and then the book will take off.

Movie Recommendation

This is another tough one. There are so many movies that I love. If I had to pick one again it would be The Young Philadelphians. The Young Philadelphians is a black and white older movie but is a fantastic story, a heartbreaking romance, a mystery, a scandal, a crime and a legal thriller all in one. It doesn’t hurt to watch a young Paul Newman navigate through his heritage in Philadelphia’s Main Line in its hay day.

You have it all in this movie and it is entertaining from start to finish.  The movie was a favorite of my Moms and one night when it was on TMC , she shared it with me.  Watching the movie through her eyes, a Philadelphia native, and with her commentary is a fond memory. I repeated the activity some years later with my grown son who was considering a profession in the law.  Watching Newman as a defense lawyer, protecting his best friend, sealed the decision of law school for him.

Mom and I invested in the movie as a DVD (it was a whopping $100 to buy – lots in the 90’s) and swapped it back and forth.  Years later, I ordered it as a dvd to watch whenever I wished. Mom died suddenly in 2021.  After a few months of her passing I was feeling particularly down and popped on the TV. TMC was playing The Young Philadelphians – a rare occurrence these days. Thanks, Mom, I needed that.

Wild Card Recommendation

Over the holidays, my daughter watched episodes of an Apple series, Ted Lasso,  in our family room. Our taste in tv shows does not generally mesh but she insisted that my husband and I watch it with her from the beginning.  She was right.  Ted Lasso is a rare gem.  It is a TV show that combines heart, humor and multidimensional characters with complicated character arcs that entertain, delight and yes, in some cases makes you cry.  Do not miss out on this one.  It will make you feel good.

About Claudine’s book It Gets Easier

Every new mom learns pretty quickly how difficult new motherhood is but also that nobody tells the truth about it. Author and narrator Claudine Wolk learned the same lesson after her son was born but decided to speak the truth about motherhood with humorous insight and reality-based suggestions. A few crucial tips can make motherhood a bit more controllable and a lot more enjoyable.
