Three Things on a Saturday Night With Ethan Avery

We’re back again for another Saturday night feature! This time it’s with author Ethan Avery who is the author of the Sword and Sorcery series. The first in the series Frostfire is one to read if you absolutely love fantasy! I’ll be sharing more about the book at the end of this post. But first, take it away Ethan!

Book Recommendation

As a fantasy writer for teenagers myself, I’d love to shout out some fun fantasy things teens and their families might enjoy. First off is The Dragon of Trelian by Michelle Knudsen. For those looking to start their year off with an adventure about friendship, magic, and lighthearted fun for middle grade and up, give it a read. Knudsen’s first book in her Trelian trilogy follows a princess and an apprentice mage as they discover a dragon. An evil wizard, political trouble, and romance all befall the young heroes as they learn more about their world. And for anyone who enjoys The Dragon of Trelian, check out the sequel, The Princess of Trelian, and the final book in the trilogy, The Mage of Trelian.

Movie Recommendation

A great movie option for teens and their family is Turning Red from Disney Pixar. This relatable film follows a teenage girl as her body begins going through changes and she starts to come into her own as a person. Changing into a huge red panda is only one of the film’s clever uses of metaphor as it tells the tale of growing up. Boy bands, family tradition, and identity are main points of conflict in this story, which make it a great option to watch with your kids. All in all, Turning Red is another excellent addition to Pixar’s classic library of fantastic films like The Incredibles, Coco, and WALL-E.

Wildcard Recommendation

Now, a recommendation for parents. It Takes Two from Hazelight Studios. A videogame made for non-gamers, with simple controls that anyone can use, this game can be played no matter how old you are. The story follows husband and wife as they go through a rough patch in their marriage. Their daughter tries to help by getting a magical book to transform her parents into dolls. The parents have to work together to reclaim their original bodies, and in doing so began to rekindle their love for one another. A terrific story about appreciating your partner and working together, I’d suggest it for anyone in a relationship.

About Frostbite

Erevan has a problem. He grew up on the unforgiving streets of Bogudos and has the scars to prove it. His friend, however, is stuck in jail because of his mistake. But when a suspicious courier offers him a chance to fix things, should he lift his sword and journey across treacherous lands to aid her cause?

Meanwhile, Aireyal has been accepted into the wealthiest and most prestigious magical school in all the land. There’s just one problem. She can’t do magic. But that’s far from the only secret within the walls of Darr-Kamo. And what she discovers might just change the world.
