Don’t Count Yourself Out Before You Even Try

Recently, I was looking around for a new writing gig and stumbled across a call for freelancers. At first, I hesitated. It wasn’t that the call for writers had gotten a ton of reviews yet. It’s just that it wasn’t in a niche where I had a ton of experience. At least, not any obvious experience. (It was in the financial realm, by the way. I’ve written in that niche, but mostly as a ghostwriter.)

I initially considered not applying at all. But then I thought of all the other writing gigs I’ve had where I didn’t have much experience. With Tom’s Guide, I submitted samples from my own blog for consideration. For Better Homes and Gardens, I did have a few samples, but none were exactly a fit. Got both gigs anyway.

Remembering that, I decided to apply. I don’t know if I’ll be considered, but I figure I didn’t want to count myself out. There are plenty of rejections that happen in life’s journey. We don’t want to be the ones to reject ourselves before we’ve even thrown our hat in the ring.

So this week, take your chance. Don’t say you don’t have enough experience or that it’s not worth the effort. Because you just never know. You might have more experience than you realize, or you might stand out in a way that captures that person’s attention.

What are you challenging yourself to try this week?
