January Reflections and Authors’ Websites

I thought I’d take some time to reflect on the post for IWSG and what has been happening with January.

I’ve been making some slow progress with my writing; getting back into the habit has been the most important part for me. I’m beginning to embrace planning more. I think that’s the missing piece in my writing journey, and I’m eager to see how things play out for me.

IWSG asked:

What turns you off when visiting an author’s website/blog? Lack of information? A drone of negativity? Little mention of author’s books? Constant mention of books?

Strangely, I don’t seek out author’s websites often. Is that a terrible-sounding thing for you published authors out there?

I do, however, visit and sign up for websites and newsletters. I actually run into those most of the time if I see a guest post I like that an author wrote. But for those newsletters I get, what I don’t like is really lengthy newsletters that are book promotional heavy. Or ones I get a lot. Occasional ones are fine, but if I’m getting a lot of something, odds are, I’m not reading it, especially lately.

But truthfully speaking, I don’t have strong opinions on this topic. In terms of the actual website design, I like seeing an author with a blog, a clear sign-up page for their newsletter, not many pop-ups or ads, obvious social media icons, and easy navigation.

How would you answer this question?

  1. There’s been newsletters I’ve signed up for that sent too many emails so I unsubscribed. It just left me feeling like the writer didn’t respect my time. Yeah, I’m interested in what they have to say, but I also have things to get done. Find a balance, please.

    1. So true! I like the idea of offering a monthly newsletter if it’s an author one. The only weekly ones I read pretty regularly are ones related to job opps or something.
