Guest Book Review of Mindset Medicine by Mari L. McCarthy

Review by Wendy Kipfmiller-O’Brien

We’ve all heard theories about the importance of loving ourselves. It sounds great, doesn’t it? It’s such an abstract thought to us at first. When you read Mindset Medicine, you’ll be prompted with brilliant exercises that will guide you to dig deep. When you do the work, the self-love concept will become clearer. With a fresh, blank notebook, a favorite writing pen, and this book, hard inner work will happen. And then, magic will follow.

If you are choosey about your self-help reading, like I am, you’re sure to enjoy the straight talk and real-world tools on these pages. When I first road-tested a couple of these exercises, I noticed an increase in my overall awareness. Upon completing the final exercise, I felt a heightened sense of consciousness—including a clearer connection between my mind and body.

What I love about Mari’s books is that she empowers the reader to take charge of their own growth and healing, using free tools she has used herself. Even with her MS, she has reached a point in her journaling journey where she is 100% off of both OTC and prescription medication—an pure example of the power of therapeutic journaling.

The beginning chapter is about the bombardment of mental garbage we experience daily, via TV, the Internet, past trauma, our families. Mari then dares us to silence that noise and get back to us by recognizing our gifts—gifts we may have buried due to outside sources such as friends, family, the establishment, etc.

I enjoyed the honesty and sense of humor throughout the entire book. Somehow in life, we get it twisted that putting ourselves last is noble or virtuous, but as Mari writes, we can’t take care of others properly without taking proper care of ourselves FIRST. And how did we get to the point where we thought it was wrong or selfish to want? This is one of those a-ha topics that eluded me until I read it in this book. Thankfully, there’s a journaling prompt for that one too. There are clever prompt exercises ending each chapter, and I’ve done a few of them more than once.

Once we’re comfortable with the concept of loving ourselves unconditionally, the concepts of self-respect and establishing boundaries become possible again. I love how this book progresses. Furthermore, let’s choose joy and laughter, and better-feeling thoughts! Again, it seems so difficult and abstract until you read and do the work. But gratitude is something we can all connect to within ourselves, and it’s a great place to start. There’s so much in these pages that helped me commit to serious inner-work. I have a helpful tip that I have learned from all of Mari’s books: Write as if no one will ever read it. Give yourself the freedom to put your soul on the pages, it’s the way to get the most out of your daily journaling practice and to experience the absolute magic from Mindset Medicine.
