A Book and Brand For the Eco-Minded: A Loofah You’ll Love and a Book Rooted in Purpose

When considering our purchase choices, we want to make sure we’re doing right by the planet. Recently, I had the opportunity to review an eco-friendly brand, Floofah, which makes its sponges and loofahs from the luffa plant. Not only did I want to feature this amazing, eco-friendly (women-owned!) company, it was also a chance to re-introduce an environmentally passionate book I read last year, The Means of Keeping.

I’m bringing the two together to not only tell you about them and their complementary passion for the environment, but also host a fun giveaway. You can win a Floofah set for you to try yourself and a copy of the book.

First, Let’s Talk About Floofah

Floofah was started by mom and entrepreneur Phoebe, who realized the sponges she was using were contributing to our society’s landfill problem. She set out to do something about it and created Floofah as an answer to this problem.

What I love about Floofah is that it is 100% compostable. You don’t have to worry about putting harmful ingredients on your body, as it’s made from the luffa plant.

What is a luffa plant?
It’s a summer squash that is both edible and can be used to make a sponges. When it’s young, it can be eaten raw or cooked; however, as it becomes mature, it becomes fibrous, making it perfect for using as a sponge.

Upon arrival, I couldn’t wait to use this sponge and loofah in my bathroom and kitchen. You begin by letting it soak for three to five minutes, so the sponge or loofah has a chance to expand and soften a bit. Since I happen to have a pretty extensive flossing and brushing routine (nothing like writing dental copy all day to make me want to take care of my teeth), this wasn’t a long wait.

At first, using a loofah on my face felt a bit scratchy. However, over time, it softened, just as the instructions said it would. I found this to be one of my favorite exfoliating loofahs, as it isn’t too scratchy, nor does it get too soft over time. If you want to exfoliate, this is a great product to buy.

This was also perfect in the kitchen. It’s fantastic for getting these tough parts out of pots, pans, and dishes. It gets sudsy easily, so you get a nice lather going for washing off dishes. What’s great is that the loofah and sponge last a couple of months before you have to replace them.

Now, about The Means of Keeping

Some books stay with you, and The Means of Keeping is one of them. Much like Phoebe, who started Floofah, the main characters, Tereza and David, are passionate about doing something right for the environment. And they decide to take action, rather than simply lament about it online or to each other in conversations.

What I loved about the book is that it’s so much more than being an activist. It’s about loss, grief, love, and reflecting on our impact on the planet and each other, most of all. Read more of what I thought about my review. These characters were passionate about making choices that benefited the planet, not harmed it. This drive came at a cost throughout the book, but deep down, they were dedicated to what they believed in.

While not many of us can start a movement or even start a company driven by our passion for the environment, we can make purchasing choices that support the planet (and support companies and causes that do so as well).

Be sure to add The Means of Keeping to your GoodReads reading list. Or better yet, buy a copy on Amazon.com.

  1. I enjoy reading how people are trying to help the environment and their passion to keep it going.

  2. I love the idea of pairing a book with a brand! The Floofah sounds amazing and it’s so great to learn about eco conscious companies.

  3. I enjoy eco living and finding new ways to reduce waste and use products that come from sustainable resources!

  4. I love the loofas because they would be great on my ankle that I broke 7 years ago and it is still sensitive to washing.

  5. Looks like an interesting read. You just never know what the Earth will be like in 20-40 years with all the pollution we put out there.
