As much as I love a good scary story I had never heard of the tale of Angikuni Lake.
In November of the 1930s, Joe Labelle, an experienced tracker, who sought refuge from the cold, stumbles across an Inuit village in a remote area of Canada.
And there isn’t anyone around. He wanders through, calling out for friends, but no one responds. He looks into tents and find kitchen areas with food untouched, clothes with sewing needles unfinished. Weapons are left and abandoned in the village. Kayaks were left by the lake, unused.
He leaves and returns with the mounted police after seeing the abandoned conditions of the town. They confirm the siting and report that the villagers had left about two months prior, before the start of winter. Other evidence of the bizarre include seven dogs tied up that died of starvation. The police nor anyone else could find evidence of why the villagers left.
Of course, like all legends, this one has its holes. I dug around online and found an obscure website that did it’s own research and found out that the mounted police in the area completely debunked the story and claimed that the tale originated from a fanciful newspaper columnist who made up the tale and even used a fake photograph to “prove” his story. This was an article published before the more famous telling of the tale in the 1959 book “Stranger than Science” by Frank Edwards.
Either way, the idea of an abandoned village with no evidence of why people left, has always intrigued me. It isn’t a new urban legend as I’ve heard other types of stories of abandoned villages before, but it does inspire the muse doesn’t it?
Why would these people have left their village? What if you came across an abandoned neighborhood or village that was inhabited the last time you were there?
Write a story from the perspective of the villager who disappeared or the perspective of the traveler who finds the village.

Really interesting! It reminds me of a village near our town in the UK: people forced to abandon as they flooded the valley to make a reservoir and dam many years ago. When the water's low enough, you can see the tops of the houses.
Oh that would creep me out so bad to see those houses!
