3 Things on a Saturday Night With Ron Chapman

We’re back for another Saturday night post! Today, I have Ron Chapman who is touring his book The Dark Side of Grace with WOW! Women on Writing. I’ll be sharing more about his book at the end of the post, but first, we have Ron’s recommendations for your Saturday night!

Take it away Ron!

Book Recommendation:

When Carlos Ruiz Zafon died in 2020, I realized as a tribute I needed to return to his magnificent Cemetery of Forgotten Books Series. The novels showcase books in a most wonderful fashion and in the mysterious realm of Barcelona. It was a magical experience reading them from start to finish during the pandemic. While the whole storyline is wonderful, The Shadow of the Wind strikes me as the most well-realized. Regardless, the entire mystical framing is utterly captivating, and I’m smiling warmly even now as I recall them here.

Movie Recommendation:

Whale Rider, the inspiring film from New Zealand filmed entirely with Maori actors is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve seen on film. Partly it is because of the incredible power of myth that is so poignantly portrayed, and how much it affects a society and its people. However, the acting of Keisha Castle-Hughes as Paikea Apirana is just stunning for one so young. It may be we live in a cynical time, but I will always make room for content that uplifts.

Wild Card Recommendation:

I’m captivated with Goldbelly.com and their whole “iconic foods” business model! It’s really fun to scroll through and find signature foods from all over the country that I’ve forgotten. And sometimes to have them shipped in just because we can. It’s really almost ridiculous that you can track down barbecue to die for, or a cheesecake with which you were smitten. Or for that matter, to try something you couldn’t even imagine. Seems like the ultimate decadent modern option!

What fantastic recommendations, thank you Ron!

About His Book, The Dark Side of Grace

A devastating terrorist bomb blast at a spiritual retreat outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, sends journalist Kevin Pitcairn and his beloved Emmy on a quixotic quest to understand the roots of violence. Traveling across the country deep into the bowels of Southern Appalachia, their search takes them through a long-standing rift in the American consciousness to confrontations with remarkable and anomalous characters, some of them deeply spiritual, others well-grounded in research and psychology.

In this sequel to the much-acclaimed A Killer’s Grace, Pitcairn and Emmy return to the exploration of innocence while adding to it a deepening understanding of injury and ordeal―and its amazing corollary of Post-Traumatic Growth. As the quest and its dangers rip their lives apart, doors open that lure them back and forth across the country in search of tendrils tying together the events and anguish, as well as bringing the protagonists more deeply together.

The Dark Side of Grace  is available in print and as an ebook at Amazon. You can add it to your GoodReads reading list as well.
