Reading Suggestion
Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday
I was browsing through books on Amazon.com, as if I need another damn book, and Stillness is the Key came up in my feed. The title alone intrigued me. I noticed who the writer was, so I added it to my cart. I think it is fair to say that I have his other books, The Obstacle is the Way, and Ego is the Enemy and have not read them. I figured it will be another book in my collection to read one day. When the book arrived, for some reason, I wanted to read it. I wanted to know what about stillness. Also, what was I missing-especially since I am studying meditation more-I figured this book would help. So, I immediately started reading it.
My thinking has changed…
Ryan Holiday is an intelligent writer. His sentences are formed perfectly, and his words make you want to keep reading.. The book is broken into three domains: Mind, Spirit, and Body. Below I share a couple from each domain:
The Mind
1. The domain of the Mind-Learn how President Kennedy learned to harness the importance of stillness during trying times.
2. Become present-To be present it takes all of you. Learn how one artist took being present to the next level.
Spirit
1. The domain of the Soul-I learned so much about Tiger Woods, and why we must protect our spirit.
2. Choose Virtue-Learn what virtue is and what philosophers had to say about it.
Body
1. The Domain of the Body-Winston Churchill was a beast, or was he? Read this chapter to understand the importance of taking care of your body.
2. Say No-Yep, you guessed it, when you say no to someone you are saying yes to yourself.
This book is one of the most powerful books I have read thus far. I learned a lot about people, but I learned more about myself. Most importantly, I learned more about the importance of being still. I highly recommend this book.
Movie Suggestion
Wall-E
This Disney/Pixar animated movie is about mainly patience. I don’t want to give away everything about this movie but this is one of the sweetest movies I’ve ever seen. Yes, it is animated, however you and I both know that we can learn a lot from animated movies. There is always a story to tell. It’s about a robot who is determined to figure some things out. I’ll let you watch the movie to figure out what those things are. As I mentioned earlier it taught me about patience and waiting for the outcome of life whatever that outcome may be whether it’s love, dream job, a dream house, or anything else you may want. We cannot control everything, so learn to let things be. Allow the art of allowing.
Wildcard Suggestion
Cruising
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a cruiser. I have been on 18 cruises with five more booked as I write this today. People always ask me, what do I love about cruising? I tell them I love the peace and freedom it brings me. It is the opportunity to be away from my phone and work and allow myself to be me. I have met some of the most wonderful people on cruise ships. People are free to be who they want to be (some people are really free). If you have not been on a cruise I recommend trying it one time, if you don’t like it it’s OK. But, most people I have met, do enjoy themselves. They may not become a cruise junkie like myself, but they definitely enjoyed it. Yes, take the Dramamine. Your body will adjust trust me. And NO you will not fall off the ship. Go with an open mind and enjoy yourself.
Thank you Marla! I LOVE your suggestions!
