Three Things on a Saturday Night (& Giveaway!)

I am excited to have author Kim Marie joining us today! She’s hosting this week’s edition, as part of the launch of her charming picture book A GIRAFFE WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH. Join us and enter to win a copy of her book too!

But first, take it away Kim with your recommendations!

BOOK: The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley is a perfect Saturday Night escape.  With bits of humor and romance, this page turning mystery will keep you guessing until the end.  The book starts with down-on-her-luck Jess arriving at her brother’s swanky, ominous apartment in Paris; a cat, with blood-soaked paws is there, but Ben is nowhere to be found. Jess is scrappy and street smart, but traversing an unfamiliar city with occasional language barriers impedes her quest to find out what happened to the beloved Ben. Suspicious tenants, including one of Ben’s former classmates, a pompous socialite, an angry drunk, a hot mess, and a snoopy concierge, plus hidden staircases and secret rooms make this a fun Saturday Night read.  I recommend pairing the twists and turns of this mystery novel with a glass of Champagne, Bordeaux Merlot, or sparkling grape juice.

MOVIE:  A Walk in the Woods, starring Robert Redford, Nick Nolte, Emma Thompson, and Mary Steenburgen, is a fun comedy-drama for a Saturday night!  The movie is based on a travel novel by the same name.  It follows author Bill Bryson’s hilarious account of his attempt to walk the 2,100-mile Appalachia Trail from Georgia to Maine.  He enlists the company of Stephen Katz, an out-of-shape former classmate; together, they meet many interesting characters along their journey.  Like the book, the movie is filled with humor; it also includes beautiful scenery.  I recommend enjoying this fun movie with a can of O-Doul’s or Pabst Blue Ribbon beer.

WILDCARD:  The Board/Card game, Sequence, is a multi-generational favorite with my family.  According to the box, it’s “an exciting game of strategy”.  I would argue that it’s mostly luck.  The game includes a double deck of standard playing cards, a board with two images of each card (except Jacks which are wild), and colored chips.  The object is to get 5 of your colored chips in a row (a sequence).  It can be played with two or three individuals or teams.  We like it because you don’t have to concentrate too hard, so you can enjoy a conversation while playing.  I recommend sharing a blenderful of ice cream drinks, (Grasshoppers or Brandy Alexanders) or plain old chocolate malts while playing Sequence

If you’re home alone on a Saturday night, perhaps you’d enjoy coloring.  May I recommend my Live Your Dreams Coloring Journal? It includes 52 (one for each Saturday Night of the year) original designs – mandalas, geometric patterns, and nature inspired illustrations – with encouraging messages and accompanying journal pages to reflect on and/or share.  But, please don’t drink a whole blenderful of ice cream by yourself, or you’ll end up with a tummy ache!

Thank you so much Kim! And folks, you have the chance to win a copy of her children’s book A GIRAFFE WHO MAKES YOU LAUGH. Enter via Rafflecopter below. You have until August 31st to enter.

  1. I don’t know the ages for it but it sounds like a story my granddaughter would enjoy having read to her. The cover is very cute. encourage the kids to read and look at books often.

    1. Best, Wishes, Linda! My granddaughters love it! The book includes a simple, repetitive rhyme. After hearing the story once, non-readers can almost recite the entire story. With cues from the illustrations, it won’t be long and they’ll actually be reading the words. The winner will be selected in a couple of days!

  2. Giraffes are my ‘spirit animal’ and to see one with a guitar on the cover of a children’s book immediately draws me to it!
