Three Suggestions on a Saturday Night

My first guest contributor! Welcome Hannah Rowen Fry!

I am so honored to have my first guest! Author Hannah Rowen Fry shares her suggestions for your Saturday night. She just launched her book THE WAY OF GRATITUDE. Make sure you check it out on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Or support local bookstores by purchasing a copy on Bookshop.org. Don’t forget to add it to your GoodReads reading list! Take it away Hannah!

Your Reading Suggestion:

I really don’t like reading in the evenings. I’m a morning reader, maybe in the afternoon if I’m going to the beach. But what I do read on Saturday night is song lyrics. Whatever show my husband and I happen to be watching, I’ll look up the words to the songs that play in the background. I think about why each song was chosen for the scene. Did the artist intend to write it for the show? What other songs by that artist do I know? Music can really make or break a scene, and although it’s usually the music notes that add depth to the feeling, the words have a huge impact, too. Grey’s Anatomy brought a lot of artists to light, and since then music in television and movies has been an area of interest for me.

Your Movie Suggestion:

One of the best movies for any day and any time in Just Go With It. It stars Adam Sandler and Jennifer Anniston with supporting roles from Nicole Kidman, Bailee Madison, Nick Swardson, and Dave Matthews. Yes, the Dave Matthews. What I love about this movie is the endless quotable lines that leave me giggling the whole time! It feels like Sandler just called up all his friends and said, “Want to go to Hawaii with me for a few weeks and we’ll just hang out and see what happens?” I often wonder how much of the script made the final cut and how much was improvised! If you like Adam Sandler’s comedy like I do, you’ll love Just Go With It. And even if you’re not a Sandler fan, this movie has a great soundtrack, tons of cameos, and beautiful scenes of Hawaii. The perfect feel good comedy for your weekend!

Your Wild Card Suggestion:

I’ve always been a fan of staying home on Saturday nights. For one, I grew up going to church every Sunday morning and needed to be up early. As an adult, I transitioned to working in ministry which included even earlier Sunday mornings. So Saturday nights at home have almost always been part of my routine. Because of this, my wild card suggestion is not all that wild – crack open a new puzzle or LEGO set, grab a glass of wine and some popcorn, put on a movie, and enjoy the simplicities of life! I’m currently loving Trader Joe’s Phigment Red Blend, a surprisingly complex wine at the $8 price point. There’s something about a balanced wine with a simple thrift-store purchased puzzle that just evokes gratitude in me. It can be risky buying a puzzle or lego set secondhand, but even if the pieces aren’t all there, the joy of the moment still is!
