The Fiction Book That Made Me Wonder if It Was Real

And the movie and wildcard recommendation for your Saturday night.

It’s October! That means it’s a spooky season or the pumpkin season or basically that beautiful time when the leaves start to change and weather gets cooler.

How are you doing during this final quarter of the year? I’ve had a lot of ups and downs. Navigating the challenges of freelance work with my day job has been tough. I ran into trouble recently with figuring out what I want to offer as a service to people. I started out with public relations earlier this year then recently considered virtual assistant work. That didn’t quite turn out like I thought. Such is the way of freelancing I guess!

So, here is your book, movie, and wildcard recommendation for your Saturday night. As you can tell, I’m continuously tweaking the subject line for this newsletter, hoping to draw people in!

My Book Recommendation: Night Film by Marisha Pessl

It has been almost ten years since I last read this book and it has still stayed with me. In Night Film, an investigator finds a young woman who has committed suicide. However, the circumstances around her death makes him look further into her life and death. This leads him down a rabbithole of looking into the woman’s mysterious father, a famous director who hasn’t been seen in 30 years.

I loved this book so much. In fact, the author did such incredible details and rich history and backstory, it made me wonder if certain elements were real. I vividly remembered googling portions of it after to see if any of the elements were based in truth.

So, I highly recommend this atmospheric book for your October Saturday night!

Add it to your GoodReads reading list.

My Movie Recommendation: After (2012)

Prime Video: After

I love indie movies! They may not get the best ratings or even the most attention but every now and then you come across a real gem. I recently watched After on Tubi and what a thrill! Two people wake up after a bus accident to find out their entire town has disappeared. Why that’s happened and where everyone went? You’ll have to watch and find out of course.

The entire movie is atmospheric and chilling without being overly scary. So if that sounds like your kind of movie, make sure to watch it on streaming this weekend.

Check it out on IMDb.

Wildcard Recommendation: Abandonware

What old PC game did you like as a kid? Oregon Trail? Doom? Sonic the Hedgehog? Did you know these games no longer exist just in your mind? But in real life?? For you to play???

Build up over! You can now play countless classics over at Abandonware. I actually tried out Oregon Trail for the first time (and sucked at it). But I can’t wait to go back and find other relics.

Check it out here (and hunt down your favorites): https://www.myabandonware.com/
