I’m always pleased to have an author as a frequent presence on my blog. Author Julie Anderson has previously written guest posts and contributed to my Three Things on a Saturday Night post. I recently had the opportunity to review her book The Midnight Man, a historical fiction murdery mystery.
Before we get to my review, here’s more about the book:
One cold dark night, as a devastated London shivers through the transition to post-war life, a young nurse goes missing from the South London Hospital for Women & Children. Her body is discovered hours later behind a locked door.
Two women from the hospital join forces to investigate the case. Determined not to return to the futures laid out for them before the war, the unlikely sleuths must face their own demons and dilemmas as they pursue – The Midnight Man.
My review:
What a great blend of history and mystery! It’s one of my favorite combinations. The author did a great job of introducing me to the world of post-World War II England. It starts out with a captivating prologue that really roped me in, making me want to know more about how this woman got into this predicament. Then, we get to know Faye, who runs a canteen for a local hospital and spots a mysterious woman who has come by for a meal. We later learn this is Ellie, who has arrived in town after a relationship fell apart.
However, when Ellie finally settles into a place to stay (as offered to her by the reluctantly kind Faye), she overhears a woman potentially getting attacked. She’s not the best audible witness but gets roped into solving the crime when she becomes convinced that she could have done something to help the victim.
As I said, this book is a fantastic blend of a murder mystery and historical fiction. The author did so well developing the characters and making them feel real to me. She switches POV, but that didn’t distract me from the plotline.
Overall, I definitely recommend this one.
