Confession time: I am a sucker for books on writing. If you ever want my attention, request that I review your book on writing. Even as a kid, I used to search the aisles in the library for one I hadn’t read yet. And recently, I had the chance to review Creating Your First Book by Hank Quense. I can’t wait to tell you about it!

Most aspiring authors concentrate on writing the book to the exclusion of all else. However, the reality is that creating a book is a long-term, multi-phase project and writing it is only one facet of the project.
The complete project involves five separate phases:
- Planning the book
- Writing the book
- Publishing the book
- Marketing the book
- Author business issues
Unfortunately, planning and writing a book does nothing to prepare the author for the other phases of the project. The only commonality between the phases is that they are about a single book.
Another difficulty with the creative project is that almost all information on the process only discusses one phase of it.

My Thoughts:
One of my goals for writing has been to embrace a planning process. This book was PERFECT for me. What I loved about it is that it felt like a course in a book. The author gave you plenty of lessons through each stage of the writing process, from character development to plotting. He gives plenty of actionable things you can do to help you really understand what you may be missing while you write.
If you want a book that’s very hands on, you’ll want this book. So many books on writing go on and on through text and it’s really not all that helpful. I love the step by step approach this author takes.
