Sonia’s Song is the story of one girl, who rises from war’s ashes to sing the songs of hope and love world-wide. A heart-wrenching and poignant memoir, by internationally renowned singer Sonia Korn-Grimani. Learn more about Sonia at http://claygrouse.com/sonias_song/.

As part of this amazing blogging event, I wanted to talk about what it means to struggle through difficult times and still finding a way to focus on the positive and count our blessings. And just as Sonia did, find the music in life.
Just last week, I faced an extremely difficult situation. As some of you may know, I have a brother with a serious mental illness. He was diagnosed with Schizophrenia and most recently considered high risk for suicide.
Last week, my mom and I went to see him and meet with his doctor and show support. And let me tell you, it was not an easy visit. It was very emotional, and on top of the visible impact of his illness, he also lives in a bad neighborhood that is notorious for crime and gang violence and we are especially concerned that he may be taken advantage of one day, because of how vulnerable he is.

Is it possible to focus on the positive when this situation seems so dreary and sad?

You bet. In fact, today and last night both my mom and I took steps to help my brother into a better situation. It means so much that we were able to do that and we are continuing to fight for his well-being. My mom inspires me to do this and I have learned so much from her on continuing to fight for what you believe in. And my brother inspires me as well and he has taught me a lot about respect for others and kindness towards others no matter what.

Now in spirit of the today’s subject, I will end this post with a song. “Fields of Gold,” by Sting, is one of my brother’s favorite songs. In fact, since I can remember, he has always been a fan of Sting (and listened to this very song last week with my mom and I).

How do you continue to find the positive in a difficult situation? What song inspires you? By leaving a comment today, you have a chance to win a copy of Sonia’s Song, either in print or e-book form.

  2. Great post! And what a wonderful mother you and your brother have; and it's so good you all care about each other and help each other. I wish the very best for your brother and your entire family. Fields of Gold is a great song, too.
