I’m always a fan of books that take me by surprise. I recently finished Adventures in Retirement, Book 2: OMG … What Have I Done! by Lawrence Doyle. I smiled the whole way through.
Before I get to my review, here’s what it’s about:
Wondering what you’ll do in retirement? Concerned about how you’ll fill the time? You’re not alone. Millions of people retire every year and most find it challenging to figure out what to do with the next chapter.
Adventures in Retirement, Book 2: OMG … What Have I Done! takes a lighthearted look at the author’s efforts during his first two years of retirement to uncover all that it has to offer. Join him as he explores:
- The most dangerous of sports, flyfishing.
- The true appeal of the batting cage.
- Surviving a pandemic by inventing endless at-home activities.
- The not-so-true story behind a legendary zombie attack.
- Wasting countless hours on video games.
- Dog training for humans.
- Making vegetarian meals that aren’t completely inedible.
- Forging weapons of minimal destruction.
- And much, much more!
My Review
I enjoyed every moment of reading this book! While it’s a book, each chapter read like mini stories, all intertwined together. The author explores different ways to find himself in his retirement years. I’m a huge fan of memoirs and nonfiction that bring me close to how someone lives their life. This one did that for me. I felt like I knew the author by the end and was disappointed it was over.
This memoir isn’t just for people nearing retirement. I think it’s for all of us who wonder about what things would be like for us if we gave it a try. I loved exploring the foibles and fears of flyfishing with the author. I liked reading about his attempt to sell on Etsy. I really enjoyed how he described playing video games. It made me wonder about things I’d like to try by the end of it.
I look forward to reading more by him and highly recommend this!
