5 Things That Always Seem to Happen on Rainy Days

Inspired by a rainy March Monday morning, I decided to write my first normal blog post in a long time. I’ve been bogged down a lot lately by blogging to-do’s and writing pursuits (which are going well!) and regular day-to-day blogging has taken a minor backseat. Until today!

So there are certain things that always tend to happen on a rainy day and a couple that have happened very recently. It’s something about dreary days like today that bring out the bad crummy luck.

1) You miss your bus.

This happened this morning actually. Apparently my attempt at waving down the driver went unnoticed and I had to wait ten minutes for the next one. Sure, not terrible.

But I remember one year when it was in the teens here on a cold winter night my mom and I were trying to catch a bus home. Despite banging on the windows, the driver sped off, making us wait 30 minutes in really cold weather until we decided to just call a cab.

2) You slip and fall (into mud or dog poop).

Yes, ladies and gentleman. Two weeks ago, I missed the last step going down stairs outside of my apartment complex. This caused me to careen forward and fall right into dog poop a neighbor didn’t pick up.

3) Your umbrella flips out.

This is a huge reason I don’t like umbrellas and don’t take them with me usually. I feel like such a dork when wind and rain pick up and the umbrella is flipping inside out.

4) You didn’t wear warm enough shoes.

Sneakers aren’t good rain wear. Neither are UGG boots actually. I think I need to invest in some decent looking rain boots because so far everything I wear in this weather isn’t warm enough.

5) You have to use the bathroom. Really bad.

Isn’t this always the case? Although I have no memorable stories behind this one, once I heard from this lady who said she was sitting at a bus stop and it started to rain really bad. She didn’t have any coat or umbrella and had to use the bathroom too. With the bus not showing up, and the rain continuing she just decided to cry and wet her pants. Sometimes you just have to lean into the experience all the way.

But there are upsides to a rainy day, and despite the dreary commute, I do actually like rainy days. So to end this post on a high note, here is one of my favorite rainy day songs:

  1. It rained this morning where I was too. I used it to clean out the fridge and a pantry shelf. Dog poo…Ew!

  2. Rainy days are my favorite. I'm nearly 30 but I still get a kick out of jumping in puddles, it's all fun and games until you jump in an oil slick puddle and get water in your mouth. Eww.

  3. I have a funny story about the umbrella one. My son is autistic and has always wanted a bog umbrella. You know the ones that are not compact. Well I got him a cheapie one at the dollar store and had it put away until it was a rainy day. Well that day came, I opened the umbrella and showed him how to open/ close it. I went out the door with him to walk him to his bus, and boom wind hit that umbrella and the whole think just flipped up and all the prong things popped out and it was history. My son leaves me and runs for the bus and of course i was standing underneath the eve of my porch and the water was just pouring on my head and my son was nice and dry n the bus and I was soaking wet. As I am standing there the bus driver says oh he is not allowed to bring that umbrella on the bus anyway because it has a sharp point at the top pf it. As I am standing there with a jacked up umbrella I am like thanks for the information lady. 🙂

  4. Boy I am so happy I have never had a bad rainy day. I enjoy rainy days a lot. I probably just jinxed myself by saying that about rainy days.

  8. And I would also add to this list that one's shoe laces will come untied while walking outside in the rain.

  9. the umbrella is the most annoying, you'd think someone would invent a better one so you wouldn't get soaking in those few seconds.

  10. I try not to use umbrellas on rainy windy days, I find it easier just to get wet!

  13. As I write –Its raining in S. Idaho, the wind always blows here and its cold today– so I made three soups for dinner, for my crew of6 (thats including me too) and want a break in the rain so ai can go outside and plant some flowers Thanks so much for sharing–I hate shoes of any kind let alone ones that don't keep your feet warm when it rains

  20. Wow your rainey days are a little like mine, we went out to eat this past Saturday and little did we really think about even though we heard the weather reports that we would have any trouble getting home, well we did, could not get to our home and you are right tennis shoes are terrible in the rain, and a zip up sweat shirt is not handy when wet and it gets cold, well we spend the night in someones driveway because we could not get home. But about 4 am water receded enough across our home to get up our driveway (at the top of a hill) and we have been home sine (lake is still over the bridges, and more rain is predicted, but come this summer us Oklahomans will probably be fussing about the dry weather not me or my cold wet feet.

  21. I love rainy days and have never experienced anything like you have. The sound of rain is so relaxing to me. What a great post. I really enjoyed reading it.

  22. Haha, this is all so true! Which is why I love being inside(or sitting on my covered porch) during the rain. I like listening to it, it's comforting.

  23. I love that song! And another thing that always happens on rainy days: it starts to let up a little…until you get to where you're going, then it pours!! And you have to park on the far side of the parking lot, lol.

  24. I hate getting my shoes/socks/feet wet when it rains! Also, I forget my umbrella in the car all of the time. In Florida we get showers every afternoon during the summer, and you would think I would remember to have my umbrella for when it rains as I am leaving work.

  25. YES!! Another thing that always seems to happen on rainy days to me………as soon as I get home it stops raining and the sun comes out!! Yup!! Thank you for sharing!

  26. Hahaha! It's so true!! I have a pretty long walk from my car to my office. Last week, it was pouring outside. My umbrella would not stop flipping inside out! I was soaked by the time I got inside the building!!
